Murphy Yadkinville - Rev. Dr. James Irving Murphy, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 5, 2012. He was born June 30, 1935 in Johnston County to the late Ashley Irving Murphy and Virma Ione Poole Murphy. Jim was a graduate of Wake Forest University and got his doctorate from Southeastern Baptist Seminary. He was President of the General Board of N.C. Baptist Convention in 1985 and his was in the ministry for 52 years. He was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed his cabin in Wilkes County, which was built in 2001, after his retirement. Jim loved his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Murphy. Surviving are his wife, Nell Skaggs Murphy; children, Jimmy Murphy and wife Vickie, Nancy M. Tyler; grandchildren, Drew Murphy and wife Ceirra, Rachel Butler and husband Brett, Dan Murphy, Leigh Jones and husband Kris, and Zackary Tyler; great grandchildren, Brett Butler, Jr., Tinley Reins Murphy; brothers, Milton Murphy and wife Pat, Ronald Murphy and wife Karen; several nieces, nephews and other family members. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Ralph Holt and the Rev. Kenny Gooden. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
