Boonville Ms. Meme Mckensie Brown, 21, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Monday, October 15, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a strong and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Meme was a gift from God and had a contagious smile that won the hearts of everyone she met. To know her was to love her. She enjoyed life and lived every day to the fullest. Meme was born October 30, 1990 in Forsyth County to David and Sharon Dobbins Brown. She graduated from Starmount High School in 2009 with High Honors and was a member of the National Honor Society. Meme played basketball and varsity volleyball all four years. She ran track for two years. Meme was all conference in volleyball in 2007, 2008, and 2009; all conference in track in 2008 and 2009. She was voted female "Ram of the Year" in 2009. Meme was a recipient of the Jessie & Albert Martin Scholarship and the Kay Yow Basketball Scholarship. She attended Lees McRae on both athletic and academic scholarships where she was a college athlete for two years, playing on the women's volleyball team and made the Dean's List. After becoming sick, Meme changed her major from teaching to nursing, enrolling at Appalachian State University. She was recognized for 12 years perfect attendance for Sunday school at Boonville Baptist Church, where she was a member and was very active in many aspects of the church organizations. Meme was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, James Dobbins and paternal grandparents, C.D. and Jacqueline "Jackie" Brown. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, "Brother" Tyler Brown and fiancée Erika Conway; grandmother, Edith Dobbins; great grandmother, Bonnie Brown; special Aunt, Mariena Shore; special aunt and uncle, Dean and Amy Davis; first cousins, Jennifer (Brandon) Hiatt, James (Leigh Ann) Shore, and Joseph Shore; her "adopted" sister, Mary Katherine Taylor; and a host of many cousins and many, many special friends. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 2:00PM at Peacehaven Baptist Church with Rev. John Brown and Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow in Boonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the "Meme Mckensie Brown, Fight Like A Girl, Scholarship Fund", First Citizens Bank in Boonville, 105 E. Main Street, Boonville, NC 27011. The family wishes to thank the staff of WFBMC 10th Floor Reynolds Tower and Dr. Samuel Lentz and his staff for three years of love, care, prayers, and support shown to them and to Meme during her illness. They would also like to thank the staff of Lees McRae College and Appalachian State University for the sincere compassion shown to Meme during her time of illness, and to everyone who has been there for Meme during this difficult time.
