Ruth Long Downey

Downey Yadkinville - Ruth Long Downey, 86, passed away Monday, June 3. 2013 at the Palliative Care Unit at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born August 24, 1926 in Surry County to the late John Andrew Long and Dellia Hodges Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Downey, Jr.; son, Alton Hemric; brothers and sisters, Luther "Larry" Long, Vera Irene Long Wilmoth, Forest Clifton "Ted" Long, Phoebe "Jane" Long Alexander, Shady Andrew "Andy" Long, Ruby Elizabeth "Lib" Long Harris, Eldridge Farrington "Bud" Long. Surviving are her children, Debora (Richard) Danner, Judy (Jerry) Finney; grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Wylie, Nicholas (Mandy) Wylie, Amber (Chris) Cordell, Jerry "Jay" Finney, Jr.; great grandchildren, Lydda Grace Wylie, Wade Wylie, Dakota Wylie, Christopher Cordell, Amy Cordell. Mrs. Downey was the owner of Gala Shoes, Inc. that was located in the Yadkin Plaza Shopping Center in the 1970's. She was active in several Southern Baptist Churches throughout her life. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by the Rev. Gary Byrum. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The family expresses thanks for the excellent care given to Mrs. Downey by Dr. Mark Corbett and the Palliative Care team at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
