Robert Flake Swaim

Robert Flake Swaim, 92, died June 12, 2013, at his home after being in declining health for several months. He was born January 11, 1921, to Milton Homer and Lula Jane Chappell Swaim. Flake served on the USS Clifford B. Ashby during WWII. He was a farmer and loved growing and sharing watermelons and vegetables he grew in his garden. Throughout his life, he was an avid hunter. Until he was 80 years old, he worked as a hunting guide at Mackay Point Plantation in South Carolina, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother Grace Ashley Swaim; brothers Benjamin, Earl, Gray, and Claude Swaim; sister Mozelle Swaim Brown; brother-in-law Alvin Brown and daughter-in-law Carol Swaim. Flake is survived by his wife of nearly 73 years, Lorene Reece Swaim; children Gail (Ken) Metzger, Glenda (Rudy) Pardue, Robert Swaim (friend Gail Dinkins), and Jan (Brad) Storie. Also surviving are grandchildren Lisa (Brian) Haynes, Bonnie (Steve) Sloan, Chad Pardue, Lori Stinson, Bridget Swaim, Leah (Ral) Man, and Luke Storie (fiancée Maggie Abbott); great- grandchildren Jordan Pardue, Jesse Stinson, Austin Pardue, Lindsey Haynes, Caleb Sloan, Ethan Stanley and Lucas and Caroline Man; sister Doris (Dennis) Spicer; nephew Dean (Debbie) Swaim; nieces Kathy (Ronnie) Ray and Dawn (David) Brown; and sister-in-law Geraldine Swaim. A memorial Service will be held Saturday June 15, 2013 at 4:00 PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service Chapel in Jonesville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Swaim's Baptist Church where he was a member. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055 or Swaim's Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3919 Swaim's Church Rd., Hamptonville, NC 27020. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Evan Ballard and the staff at Jonesville Family Medical Center and to Mountain Valley Hospice, especially Margie Willard and Lynn Brown.
