- Mr. James Conrad McDaniel, Sr., 89, of Wilson Street passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born July 22, 1923 in Pike county, MS to the late James Marshall and Mollie Raborn McDaniel. Mr. McDaniel was retired from Swift & Co., now known as ConAgra, with several years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army Signal Corps in World War II serving in Guam and Iwo Jima. Mr. McDaniel was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Yadkinville, was active with the Gideons, while his health permitted, and was a non active member of the Masonic Lodge for over 63 years. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ellen Ellzey McDaniel; his son, James Conrad McDaniel, Jr.; brother, Sidney McDaniel; sisters, Iris M. Terrell, and her husband, Lee, Norma Lee "Tommy" M. Sandifer, and her husband, Alcus; and Nat M. Turner, and her husband, Homer. Surviving are his devoted daughter, Ginger M. Underwood, and her husband, Bob Underwood, Yadkinville; grandson, Miles C. Underwood; step-grandchildren, Donita U. Gilbert, and husband, Jeff; Scott Underwood; step-grandchildren, Zack Groce, Karley Groce; sister-in-law, Sue M. McDaniel; and several nieces and nephews in MS, LA, TN, CA, and FL. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Yadkinville. His memorial service will follow the visitation at 3:00 PM Sunday in the church with Rev. Ken Boaz, Rev. John Brown, and Rev. Jimmy Lancaster, officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Gideons International, Yadkin Camp, PO Box 2451, Yadkinville, NC 27055. The family would like to express their gratitude to the his neighbors, caregivers, Jean and Britany, 5-B ICU at NC Baptist Hospital, and to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home Staff and Volunteers for all the loving care given to Mr. McDaniel.
