Maxine Cheek "Nanny" Thomasson

Maxine Cheek "Nanny" Thomasson, 82, Hamptonville, passed away peacefully at her cherished home on August 25, 2013. She was born April 29, 1931 in Yadkin County to Sallie Money Cheek and Lon Cheek. She was married to Zane Grey Thomasson on June 6, 1950, the same year she graduated from West Yadkin High School. Mrs. Thomasson enjoyed playing basketball in high school and was a lifelong ACC basketball fan. She retired in 1995 from West Yadkin School after 30 years of dedicated cafeteria service. Mrs. Thomasson was known for her quick wit and spirited sense of humor, and was the heart of her large extended family. She enjoyed cooking wonderful dishes and hand sewing beautiful quilts for her family and friends. She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she served on the administrative board, coordinated Christmas programs, was a member of the Women's Missionary Society, volunteered as a teacher for Vacation Bible School, and served as a youth leader. In the later years of her life she enjoyed sending hand written invitations to church homecoming services. Mrs. Thomasson is preceded in death by her beloved husband Zane Grey, her parents, and siblings Avis Cheek, Jake Cheek, Click Cheek, Dixie Lee Wolfe, Aldean Leonard, and Rickey Sidden. She is survived by her loving sister Brenda Cheek of Hamptonville, NC; four children Craig Thomasson (Sandi) of Hamptonville, NC, Gail Thomasson Wood (Jerry) of Advance, NC, Jo Ann Thomasson Moore (Ben) of Hartwell, GA, and Sarah Thomasson Kivett (Steve) of Statesville, NC; her grandchildren Leigh Anne Thomasson Shore (James), Charlie Moore (Ashley), Caroline Moore, Emily Moore, Wesley Kivett, Darin Thomasson, Julie Kivett, and Sam Kivett; and her great-grandchildren Macon Shore and Marleigh Shore. Mrs. Thomasson is also survived by a brother-n-law Charles Thomasson (Mary) and seven sister-n-laws Martha Thomasson Reid, Marie Thomasson, Jean Thomasson, Anne Thomasson, Ruth Cheek, Nan Cheek and Eva Thomasson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who came often to visit on the farm. The family would like to thank Hospice of Iredell County, as well as, the nursing and dialysis staffs of Iredell Health System and Yadkinville Dialysis Clinic. They would also like to thank the drivers of YVEDDI for the wonderful care she received. The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:30 PM Tuesday August 27, 2013 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Her funeral will be conducted at 4:00 PM Wednesday August 28, 2013 at St Paul United Methodist Church by Rev. Claudia Harrelson and Rev. Tom Sherrod. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
