Hazel Day Shermer

Shermer Boonville- Mrs. Hazel Marie Day Shermer, 81, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center Palliative Care Unit. She was born July 27, 1932 in Surry County to the late Dewey Winfield and Martha Walker Day. Mrs. Shermer retired with 25 years of service from Monleigh Garment Company. She was a devoted member of Union Grove Baptist Church where she served the church faithfully as a member of the Hospitality Committee and was a Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years. Mrs. Shermer loved her church and especially loved her Ladies Sunday School Class. She was well known for her kind compassionate heart, and how she always made sure a visitor, to her home, left with something she had baked. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Locksley Samuel Shermer; and by a brother, William "Bill" Day. Surviving are her loving children, Samuel (Patty) Shermer, Betty Shermer (Robert) Murphy; grandchildren, Robert Craig (Andrea) Murphy, Jason Shermer, David William (Bridget) Murphy; Great-Grandchildren, Olivia Grace Murphy, Owen Graham Murphy; sisters, Margie Faw, Doris Wilkins, Pat (Larry) Sizemore; brothers, Dewey "Bud" Day, Jr., Charles Tom (Peggy) Day; sister-in-law, Mary Lean Day; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 PM Saturday at Union Grove Baptist Church. Her funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:00 PM Saturday at Union Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Gooden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street Alexandria, VA 2231 or to Hospice of Davie County, 642 Wilkesboro St Mocksville, NC 27028.
