Elwood McCollum

Winston Salem Mr. Leonard Elwood "Woody" McCollum, 74, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. McCollum was born April 2, 1939 in Yadkin County to Oliver and Elizabeth Kiger McCollum. He was a member of Shacktown Church of Christ and retired from RJ Reynolds. Mr. McCollum was an avid golfer and often enjoyed going to the beach with his brothers and friends to play golf. He also played on the American Legion baseball team. Mr. McCollum loved all kinds of sports, and he was especially fond of the Washington Redskins. In addition to his parents, Mr. McCollum was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene McCollum; two nephews, David McCollum and Lewis McCollum; and a special friend, Lou Mickles. He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Dunn and husband Keith and Charlotte Willard and husband Brian; one granddaughter, Sherri Ann Whitt; two brothers, Lonnie McColllum and wife Margaret and Clifford McCollum and wife Elaine; four sisters, Dorothy Shore and husband Carl, Brenda Brown and husband Archie, Carol Parker and husband Charles, Kay Davis and husband Mitch; a sister-in-law, Phyllis McCollum; former wife and mother of his children, Brenda Foster; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00PM at Gentry Funeral Service Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Jimmy Lancaster and Elder Ricky McCollum officiating. Burial will follow at Yadkin Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and NC National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Gentry Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane Winston Salem NC 27103.
