James Franklin Brooks

September 21, 1925 — January 24, 2014

Brooks Hamptonville - Mr. James Franklin Brooks, 88, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Brooks was born in Yadkin County to Lonnie and Rachel Barber Brooks. He served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theatre as an engineer under General George Patton and participated in the Battle of The Bulge. At the age of 14, Mr. brooks joined Asbury United Methodist Church, and was the oldest standing member of the church. He retired after 33 years from McClain Trucking and was then the owner of Pineview Restaurant in Hamptonville. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Shore Brooks; an infant son; a grandson, Phillip Gray Brooks; and three sisters, Nonnie Spann, Louise Harris, and Jennie Lee Dowell. He is survived by his three children, Kay (Richard) Mast, Susan (Mike) Ferris, and Jeffrey D. Brooks; two grandchildren, Mitch Johnson and Emmylou (Lance) Dooly; six great grandchildren, Brooks and Caroline Dooly, Travis Johnson, Jacob Willard, and Kasey and Gabriel Norman; two great-great grandchildren, Caden and Brentlee; special friend, Ruby Henderson and her family; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 27, 2014 at 2:00PM at Gentry Funeral Service Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Mark Reavill officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury UMC with full military honors provided by NC National Guard Honor Guard and Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Asbury UMC, PO Box 84, Hamptonville, NC 27020. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Carol Albright and her staff at WFB Cancer Center in Elkin, Dr. Thomas Shellburne and staff, and the staff of Forsyth Medical Center Palliative Care Center and CDTU for all the love, care, and support shown to Mr. Brooks.
