Junior Leak Matthews, 93, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Matthews was born August 29, 1920 in Yadkin County to the late Robert W. and Enola Wall Matthews. Mr. Matthews was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as Deacon for 56 years, a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and was famous for his Fried Apple Pies and water melons. Mr. Matthews served our Country during World War II in the US Army 94th Infantry. He also was a charter member of the Fall Creek Fire Department, on the Fall Creek School Board, and the Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years Earline Vestal Matthews; two sisters Sissy Hobson and Betty Vestal; three brothers Edward Matthews, Bobby Matthews, and Lovell Matthews. Surviving are his children Thomas L. (Emily) Matthews, James R. (Susan) Matthews, Steven G. (Polly) Matthews; grandchildren Angela M. (Mark) Smith, Mary- Allison Jones, J. Gregory (Annah) Matthews, Tina M. (Burl) Love, Kristy Hayes, Jason Hayes, Kristi R. Matthews (Robbie), Douglas S. Matthews, Brian (Candice) Lineberry, Kevin (Candus) Lineberry; great grandchildren Samantha (Brice) Hooker, Christian Smith, Madaline Jones, Peyton Jones, Reece Jones, Ty Matthews, Zac Matthews, Emily Matthews, Brayden Love, Brenden Love, Jasymn Slater, Matthew Lineberry, Bryceson Durham, Bryttney Lineberry; great-great grandchildren Craeton Hooker, Sloane Hooker; sisters Katie (Gertie) Davis, Barbara "Polly" McKnight; brother Archie (Barbara) Matthews; several nieces and nephews; all the special "grandchildren" that called him PaPa Junior; and two special friends Denise Norman and Dorothy Potter. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM March 30, 2014 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. His funeral will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, March 31, 2014 at Friendship Baptist Church by Rev. Ray Davis, Rev. Brian Chilton, Rev. Brian Poindexter, and Rev. Danny Poindexter. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the NC National Guard and the VFW Post 10346. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund 4744 Siloam Road East Bend, NC 27018, or donor's choice.
