Roger Milburn Nichols

East Bend Mr. Roger Milburn Nichols, 90, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Vienna Village. Mr. Nichols was born December 8, 1923 to Augustin and Pearlie Norman Nichols. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in WWII. Mr. Nichols flew on the Triad Flight of Honor to Washington DC to be honored for his service. He was a lifelong member of New Home UMC where he served as a Sunday school teacher and served on many committees during his time there. Mr. Nichols was a well-known farmer in Yadkin County. He loved his farm, cattle, tractors, hunting, and being outdoors. Mr. Nichols was a member of the East Bend American Legion. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his loving wife of 32 years, Sue Whisnant Nichols; and two sisters, Vedah Fleming and Gertrude Vestal. He is survived by two daughters, LuAnne (Tim) McLelland of Pfafftown and Lisa (Greg) Padgett of Forest City; two grandchildren, Clair and John Padgett; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Foster; and two nephews, Tommy and Jimmy Fleming. A funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 2, 2014 at 3:00PM at New Home UMC with Rev. Gary Mahathey officiating. He will lie in state from 2:30 to 3:00. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post and NC National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Gentry Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Memorials may be made to New Home UMC c/o Barbara Thore, 3232 Smithtown Road, East Bend, NC 27018. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Vienna Village for all the love, care, and support shown to Mr. Nichols during his stay there.
