Jonesville Rev. Tommy Daniel Collins, 92, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014 at Yadkin Nursing Center. Mr. Collins was born May 30, 1921 in Surry County to Lewis and Ethel Harrell Collins. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in WWII with the 3rd Infantry Division and four major battles. Mr. Collins received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his injuries and acts of heroism during his service to our country. He retired from Chatham Manufacturing and pastored several churches throughout the years. His hobbies included bird watching, hiking, and trading in his younger years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Collins was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers. He is survived by his loving wife to whom he would have been married 70 years on June 3rd, Sylvania Barker Collins; his son, Derentz Collins and wife Susan; his daughter Dixie Freeman and husband Sam; two grandsons, Page Eldridge and wife Jenny and Bradley Collins and wife Jenise; two granddaughters, Dianne Campbell and husband Tim and Shelby Horton and husband Brian; one step grandson, Samuel Freeman, Jr.; six great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one sister, Annice Caudill; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 11:00AM at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Wesley Smith officiating. Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and NC National Guard Honor Guard will provide full military honors. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Gentry Funeral Service in Jonesville. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the staff of Yadkin Nursing Center for all the love, care, and support shown to Mr. Collins and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 218 Hall St, Jonesville, NC 28642 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
