Shaver Hamptonville - Larry Dean "Mickey" Shaver, 61, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at his home surrounded by his love ones. Mickey was born on November 18, 1952 to Atwell Reece "Buck" Shaver and Mona Lou Brown Shaver in Baltimore, Maryland this side of the Mason Dixon Line, as Mickey always jokingly commented. Mickey is survived in the home, by his wife of 27 years, Sandra Swisher Shaver; daughters, Brandie Swisher Couch and Emily Meadows King; grandchildren, Kirsten Burgess and Jackson Couch; mother, Mona Lou Shaver; sister, Sandra (Frank) Handy; in-laws, Harvey and Mattie Swisher; sister and brother-in-laws, Donna and Calvin Snow, Pam Swisher, Penny and Dane Eller, Laura and Junior Thompson, Robin Bowers, Kim and Jason Palmer; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Buck Shaver. Mickey started his early years out west employed as a Rancher and Bull-Rider. After moving back to North Carolina, Mickey started working as a brick mason and carpenter and then became a licensed building contractor. Mickey's real interest and talent was his wood carving and artist drawings. Mickey also had a love of nature and enjoyed hunting with his dog, Clyde and spending time with his grandchildren. Mickey will always be remembered for his positive attitude, sense of humor and support of his family and friends. Mickey represented the "true gentleman" and never questioned his trials, only approached life with a positive and love for is family and friends. Everyone who knew Mickey knew his favorite saying was "Oh Yeah" and that regardless of what was going on would say that he was doing just fine. Mickey's strength came from his love of the Lord and his spiritual faith. Throughout his battle with cancer, Mickey was surrounded by numerous friends, who always supported him with prayer and encouragement. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2014 at Branon Friends Church by Pastor Junior Thompson and Pastor Eric Morrison. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. one hour prior to the service on Friday at Branon Friends Church. The family would like to thank the entire Oncology Team at Forsyth Medical Center, Dr. Grote and nurses, Hope and Frances for all the love and care shown to Mickey.
