Betty Groce Steelman

STEELMAN - Yadkinville Betty Grace Groce Steelman passed away January 8, 2015, at Yadkin Valley Community Hospital in Yadkinville. Betty was born August 13, 1927, in Yadkin County to William Nelson Groce and Amanda Naomi Money Groce. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting in Yadkinville, NC. Mrs. Steelman and her husband, and their son, hosted a weekly bluegrass jam session for many years in the Lone Hickory Community. She was a volunteer at the annual Yadkin Valley Bluegrass Convention until her health began to decline. She was also a former volunteer with Yadkin Christian Ministries and enjoyed gardening and flowers, sewing and crafts, In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her siblings: Eula Pauline (Jesse) Dobbins, Beulah Lee (Troy) Sneed, William Elwood (Opal) Groce, Annie Mildred (George) Wiseman, and Mary Ellen (Alton) Winfrey; and a son-in-law Robert Goins. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, R. L. Steelman and her children: James "Jim" (Martha) Hutchens, Yadkinville; Shelby Goins, Easley, SC; Jerry (Hazelene) Hutchens, and Robert (Beth) Steelman, all of Yadkinville; grandchildren: Juli (William) Miller, James (Janet) Hutchens, Alan Waggoner, Neil (Marlena) Waggoner, Bradley Hutchens, and Michael Steelman; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Deep Creek Friends Meeting from 2:00 until 4:00 on Sunday, January 11 with the service to follow in the church sanctuary at 4:00 PM. Pastors Lee Lane and Randy Quate, and her great-grandson, Cameron Hutchens will officiate. Burial will follow in the Deep Creek Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to her caregivers and the staff at Yadkin Community Hospital.
