Washington Leon Cooke

Cooke Yadkinville- Mr. Washington Leon Cooke, 89, of Liberty Church Road passed away Friday January 9, 2015 at his home. He was born March 13, 1925 in Iredell County to the late Washington L. and Minnie O. Cooke. Mr. Cooke was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army and the Japan Occupation Forces from 1946-1947. Upon his return from the war, he lived most of his adult life in Moore County. He retired from the US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 20 years in Eagle Springs, NC, and was a poultry and tobacco farmer. He attended Sandy Springs Baptist Church in Iredell County at an early age, and as an adult was a member of Eagle Springs Baptist Church in Eagle Springs where he served the church faithfully as a Deacon, Choir Director, and Sunday School Superintendent. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his former wife, Grace Martin Cooke on December 30, 1995; by a brother, Lawrence A. Cooke; and a sister, Ruby Cooke Joyner. M r. Cooke moved back to Yadkin County to spend the rest of his life, after he was married on September 7, 1997 to his wife, Hazel Joyner Cooke. They have been attending Rock Springs Baptist Church in Iredell County as long as their health has permitted. Also surviving in addition to his wife of the home, are his step-children, Joan Reavis Holcomb, and her husband the late Wayne Holcomb; Ronnie Dale Reavis, and his wife, Mary; Kenneth Joyner Reavis, and his wife, Carolyn; Samuel Dewey Reavis, and his wife, Deborah, all of Yadkinville; a sister, Gwen Cook Smith of Cleveland, NC; a brother, Wendell F. Cook and his wife, Nancy of Statesville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Monday, January 12, 2015 at Sandy Springs Baptist Church. His funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00 PM Monday in the church with Mr. Cooke's nephew, Rev. Dell Cooke, officiating.
