Boonville Mrs. Edith Steelman Dobbins, 94, passed away peacefully, Monday, June 22, 2015 at Willowbrook Health Care. Mrs. Dobbins was born October 5, 1920 in Yadkin County to Joe and Sally Cass Steelman. She was a graduate of West Yadkin High School where she was valedictorian of her senior class. Mrs. Dobbins attended Pfeiffer College and was a graduate of Draughn Business College. Upon graduation, she worked at Chatham Manufacturing Company before beginning her main career as Counter Clerk at the ASCS office for over 30 years. After retirement, "Granny" volunteered at Yadkin Success Academy and Boonville Elementary School, receiving the Governor's Long Leaf Pine Award for volunteerism. She was a member of Boonville Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where she served in several roles. Mrs. Dobbins had called Willowbrook home for the past 3 years, where she was known as "Granny" to all the staff and the residents. "Granny" loved spending time with her family, working on the family farm, quilting, and shopping with her girls. She was known for her Sunday fried chicken, turnips and greens, homemade ice cream, and pumpkin pies. She was loved by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dobbins was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Dobbins; a granddaughter, Meme Mckensie Brown; and two sisters, Olene Trivette and Betty Crews. She is survived by two daughters, Mariena D. Shore and Sharon (David) Brown; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Hiatt, James (Leigh Anne) Shore, Tyler (Erika) Brown, and Joseph Shore and fiancée Sarah Morris; five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Colin, and McKennon Hiatt, and Macon and Marleigh Shore; one sister, Lola Davis; two brothers, Bill (Nancy) Steelman and James Steelman; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 4:00PM at Boonville Baptist Church Family Life Center with Rev. John Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Boonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30PM in the Family Life Center prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the "Meme Mckensie Brown Fight Like A Girl Scholarship Fund" First Citizens Bank, PO Box 219 Boonville, NC 27011 or at any First Citizens Bank location. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Willowbrook Health Care for all the loving care given to Mrs. Dobbins.
