Rev. William Detroit Byrd

Jonesville Rev. William D. Byrd, 90, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2015. Rev. Byrd was born February 25, 1925 in Yadkin County to Robert and Cora Shaffner Byrd. He was a retired southern Baptist minister. Rev. Byrd was pastor of West Concord Baptist for 24 years, and pastored five other churches over a period of 39 years in the active pastorate. After retiring in 1990, he served as interim pastor for almost 9 years and served as supply preacher in other churches. Rev. Byrd was a veteran of the US Army, having served during WWII and was a life member of the Yadkin VFW Post 10346. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesville. In addition to his parents, Rev. Byrd was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Peggy Long Byrd; three brothers, Leroy Byrd, Wayne Byrd, and Quincy "Bud" Byrd; two sisters, Jessie Holleman Moore and Wilma Jeane Royall; brother-in-law, Ed Royall; and a sister-in-law, Lotte Byrd. He is survived by two children, Donna Byrd and Randy Byrd; also, Dale Barfield and Brian Ervin whom he loved as his own; a grandson, Timothy Stancil; a great grandson, Jace Stancil; a sister-in-law, Nancy Byrd; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 3:00PM at First Baptist Church in Jonesville with Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and the NC National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00PM prior to the service at the church.
