Carl Leber Underwood, 86, passed away Thursday January 7, 2016 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Carl was born February 16, 1929 in Yadkin County to the late Marion Webster and Adelia Melinda Whitaker Underwood. He graduated from Yadkinville High School in the class of 1945, and attended High Point College. Carl married Caroline Brown on May 5, 1951. Carl served in the US Army during the Korean War. He took basic training in the 101st Airborne Infantry camp Breckinridge Kentucky. Served combat in the Korean War with 25th Infantry division, 35th Regimental Combat team from 1951- 1952. Military awards he received are Combat Infantry badge, Bronze Star, Presidential Citation with Oak Leaf cluster, United Nations Service Medal, Korean War Service Medal with two battle stars. He was employed with Reavis Oil Company, Brendles INC., Piedmont Agriculture Supply, Retired from Yadkin Grocery Company in Yadkinville. His community involvements are Director and organized the Yadkin Country Club, Charter Member of the Yadkin VFW, Charter Member of the Yadkin Moose Lodge, Charter Member of the Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department, member of Center United Methodist Church where he served as assistant Sunday school superintendent for eight years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Karen Adelia Underwood Martin, two brothers Rex Underwood and Donald Underwood, one sister Vera Margaret Long. Surviving are his wife of 64 years Caroline Brown Underwood; a grandson Gregory Daye Martin II and his wife Andrea; two granddaughters Payton Caroline Martin, Meredith Daye Martin; two sisters Sally Underwood Ragan, Lydia Underwood Brendle, both of Winston-Salem; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM Saturday January 9, 2016 at Center United Methodist Church. His funeral will be conducted at 11:00 following the Visitation ay Center United Methodist Church by Dr. Bonnie Harris and Rev. Lisa Wishon. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the NC National Guard and the VFW Post 10346.
