Georgie Kathleen Shermer

January 22, 1928 — January 12, 2016

Yadkinville Ms. Georgie Kathleen Shermer, 87, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Willowbrook Health Care. Ms. Shermer was born January 22, 1928 in Forsyth County to Alvin and Mamie Hutchens Shermer. Georgie was saved at age 18 and had read the bible over 30 times. Her and her mother called Willowbrook home in November 1994. She blossomed with the opportunity to minister to others and held a weekly Wednesday bible study for many years until failing health began to take its toll. She always tried to make sure someone was leading the study if she was not able to. The week prior to her death, she said she would have to finally give it up and let someone else take over. This was a passion and commitment of her service to the Lord. In addition to being an avid reader and teacher of the bible, she wrote many poems over the years, several of which were published. These began at an early age and were about her love for the Lord, her family, and even roommates she had at Willowbrook. In 1946, at the age of 18, she even wrote a song entitled "Precious Savior" which was set to music and copyrighted in 1947. From a young age she began having pen pals and while many have gone on before her, she remained in contact with those still living. She loved to keep in touch with family, friends, and church family either by pen or by phone. In addition to her parents, Ms. Shermer was preceded in death by her brother, Alvin "Buddy" Shermer, Jr. and his wife Virginia "Jenny" Shermer. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Kay (Edward) Choplin, Joe (Wanda) Shermer, and Mark (Penny) Shermer; great nieces and nephews, Meagan and Nikki Shermer, Tim (Amy) Beeding, and Jacob Shermer; great-great nephew and niece, Auston and Eliana Beeding; special "niece", Ann (Terry) Fulton; and many loving cousins, friends and church family. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 2:00PM at Mt. Carmel Friends Church with Pastor Jeff Farmer and Pastor Larry Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00PM prior to the service at the church. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Willowbrook Health Care for the many years of loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Friends Church, 3417 Mount Carmel Church Rd East Bend, North Carolina 27018 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
