Roger Eugene Hanes, Ph.D., 78, Cordova, Tennessee, passed away at Baptist East Hospital, Memphis, April 4, 2016. Roger was born in Forsyth County, North Carolina, December 25, 1937 to Clyde Royal and Alice Shore Hanes. Roger was raised on a farm in his beloved Piedmont area of North Carolina specializing in tobacco production, dairy operations and grain production. Roger farmed flue-cured tobacco crops as a financial means to attend North Carolina State University where he obtained his B.S in Agronomy, and his M.S in Soil and Crop Science. Roger graduated from Virginia Tech in 1970 achieving his Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry. He was the CEO/owner of United Agricultural Services, Inc., a national company located in Memphis, Tennessee, since March 1984. Roger was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church, Cordova, TN. In his many work travels from the corn-belt states of the Midwest, cotton and rice production areas of the southern states, sugarcane production areas of Louisiana, Texas and Florida, vegetable and citrus production areas of Mission, Texas to Immokalee, Florida, along the east coast to New York, peanut production areas of Virginia, Carolinas and Georgia and the small grain regions of the west, Roger has made countless friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lori Jane Hanes, a brother Thomas Lloyd Hanes and a sister Annie Ruth Hanes Casstevens. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Stokes Hanes, Cordova, Tennessee; two sons, Jeffrey Stuart Hanes (Leah), Yadkinville, North Carolina, and Eric Eugene Hanes (Lisa Deaton), Tyler Texas; two daughters Heather Lynn Hanes Elliott (Robert) Knoxville, Tennessee and Laurie Allyson Coley, Cordova, Tennessee; 9 grandchildren Omoruyi Elliott, Stephen Elliott, Seth Elliott, Shannon Elliott Merritt (Dylan), Roger Elliott, Arianna Elliott, Spencer Elliott, Brittany Booe Shugart (Jacob), Colton Hanes, Austin Hanes; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Callen Brooks Shugart. Roger leaves two brothers, Clyde Archie Hanes, Yadkinville, North Carolina and James Brady Hanes of Denver, North Carolina. The family would also like to acknowledge all the love and support shown by our Forbush Hunter Safety Team Family. Funeral Services will be conducted at Bethel Baptist Church, Yadkinville, NC April 12, 2016, at 3:30 PM with interment immediately following at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Following the service the family request that everyone join them for a meal in the Church Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 2132 Brandon Hills Road, Yadkinville, North Carolina, 27055, Forbush Hunter Safety, 1516 Taylor Road, East Bend, NC 27018, or to New Horizons Adult Day Center, PO Box 7969, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
