W. Finney Stewart

April 28, 1934 — July 5, 2016

W. Finney Stewart, 82, passed away at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC on July 5, 2016. He will be deeply and forever missed by his family and countless friends. Finney was born April 28, 1934 to the late Duncan and Lillie Stewart. He possessed a work ethic second to none and this may have been due to being the first son for his parents after they had had six daughters. Finney worked on the family farm until he began working full time at Mclean Trucking Co. in 1953, first working on the dock and then as a local truck driver. During this same time, he always had part-time jobs on his days off at various other places. When Mclean closed in 1984, he continued working for another 21 years at R J Reynolds, S & S Motors, and HKS Hardware. He also enjoyed working in his yard and in his shop with Darren as they restored cars and vintage tractors. But thanks to Jo Ann's love of traveling, Finney sort of learned to relax and they took many trips together and with friends and they also spent over 30 years enjoying weekends camping and skiing at Lake Norman. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Jo Ann Matthews Stewart, his daughter and son-in-law, Pandora Stewart Gordon and Keith and son and daughter-in-law, Darren Stewart and Donna. He was predeceased by his sisters, Pearl Holcomb, Ruby Carter, Ruth Ray, and Fronnie Brown, his brother Sammy Stewart and his father-in-law and mother in-law, James and Pauline Matthews who loved Finney as a son. He is also survived by his sisters, Lois Eads, Bonnie Ray and Nell Bailess, his sister-in-laws, Kaye McKaughn and Patricia Revelle and many nieces and nephews. The family is so appreciative of the excellent care Finney received over the past year as he went through three surgeries and two rounds of radiation. In particular, they would like to thank Dr. Cooper Scurry and Beth Wagner at Piedmont Ear, Nose and Throat, and Dr. Jeffery Kuremsky, Dr. Dawn Moose, and Candiss Vestal at Novant Health Cancer Center. The family will receive friends at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Yadkinville, NC from 6-8pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Union Grove Baptist Church, 2401 Nebo Road, Yadkinville, NC by Rev. Kenny Gooden. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to the SECU/ Mountain Valley Hospice Home of Yadkin, 320 West Maple Street, Yadkinville, NC 27055 and online condolences may be sent to www.gentryfuneralservice.com .
