Ashburn Hamptonville- Mr. Billy E. Ashburn, 84, of U.S. Highway 21 passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at his home. He was born September 11, 1931 in Surry County to the late Ellis and Lillian Simpson Ashburn. Mr. Ashburn was retired with 16 years of service with Merita Bread Company, was a farmer for over 40 years, loved playing golf, and was a member of Swaims Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Ashburn Andrews; and by a brother-in-law, E.R. Crater, Jr. Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean Chappell Ashburn of the home; his son-in-law, David M. Andrews, Hamptonville; grandchildren, Christy A. Reynolds and husband, Bradley; Marty Andrews and wife, Jordan; great-grandchildren, Austin, Reagan, Brayden, Brylee, Eli, Avarie, Alyssa; and his sister, Edna Crater of Hamptonville. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville. His funeral service will be 1:00 PM Friday at Swaims Baptist Church by Dr. Hubert Wishon and Rev. Roger Groce. Mr. Ashburn will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.
