Alfred Smith Matthews

Yadkinville Mr. Alfred Smith Matthews, 88, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Matthews was born July 9, 1928 in Yadkin County to Mannie and Belle Hutchens Matthews. He was a veteran of the US Army, a member of Forbush Baptist Church, and a member of Yadkin Masonic Lodge #0162 A.F.&A.M. He retired from Hanes Hosiery after 40 years of service. Mr. Matthews enjoyed watching NASCAR and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hebert Matthews; one sister, Inell Hayes; and four brothers, Aldean, Edison, John Henry and Graham Matthews. He is survived by his son, Donald Matthews and wife Betty Jo; a grandson, Justin Matthews and fiancée Sarah Kountz; and two sisters, Lillie Spencer and Ruby Vestal. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Forbush Baptist Church with Rev.Grady Trivette, Rev. Joe Souther, and Rev. Robin Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Matthews-Williams Family Cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post 10346, the NC National Guard Memorial Honor Guard, and Masonic Graveside Rites by Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162 A.F. & A.M.. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
