Brown East Bend – Hassel Carroll Brown, Sr., passed away Monday, October 31, 2016. He was born February 27, 1932 in Yadkin County to the late Buford Elis Brown and Hattie Maude Hobson Brown. Hassel was a lifelong member of Forbush Friends Meeting where he attended and taught Sunday school as his health permitted. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Larry Brown; brother-in-law, Wade Scott; niece, Jeanna Brown. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Nora Spillman Brown; children, Hassel Carroll (Tammy) Brown, Jr., Steven Neal (Kelly) Brown, Melinda Kathleen (Jerry) Hawks; grandchildren, Ashley (Jake) Lubel, Courtney Hawks, Hassel Carroll Brown III, Cody Brown, Emily Brown, Bethany Brown; great grandchildren, Lena Lubel, Jack Lubel; sister, Linda Scott; brother, Dayton (Sandra) Brown; several nieces and nephews. Hassel served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Guilford College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education; he also attended Wake Forest University. Hassel retired from Forsyth County School System where he taught and coached for 28 years. He was a member of Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162. Hassel served on several boards including; Yadkin Valley Bank in East Bend, Old Belt Farmers Cooperation, Horne Creek Living Historic Farm, N.C. State Agriculture Foundation, Yadkin County Farm Bureau, Yadkin Valley Economic Development District, and Farm Service Agency. He was past President of the Tobacco Growers Association of NC, and a member of the Yadkin County Chambers of Commerce. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Forbush Friends Meeting by the Rev. Ray Lamb. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and masonic rights by Yadkin Masonic Lodge #162 A.F.& A.M.. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2016 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
