Matthews East Bend – Arzie Jay Matthews, 81, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 17, 1935 in Yadkin County to the late Floyd Willie Matthews and Minnie Pendry Matthews. Arzie was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Men’s Club. He was a retired member of the East Bend Fire Department. He volunteered with Meal on Wheels, and the Salvation Army. Arzie was an avid New York Yankees fan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Winfrey Matthews; son, Anthony Gene Matthews; brother, Larry Matthews. Surviving are his children, Mavis (Charles) Dillon, Ryan (Karen) Matthews; grandchildren, Kacie (Erik) Newsom, Thomas Matthews, Mary Ellen Dillon, Brandon Matthews, Deacon Matthews; step grandchildren, Charlie Dillon, Dermont Dillon; great grandchildren, Scarlett Shoemaker, Jackson Shoemaker, Elliot Newsom; brothers, Don (Willie) Matthews, Dean (Sue) Matthews; sister-in-law, Carolyn Matthews; and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
