Yadkinville Mr. John Venson Matthews, 91, passed away Saturday March 4, 2017 at Yadkin Nursing Center. Mr. Matthews was born September 6, 1925 in Yadkin County to Hernon and Elva Norman Matthews. He was a member of Prospect UMC. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of the US Army, having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He also served in the Army National Guard. In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his step mother, Fern Wilhelm Matthews; and a brother, Charlie “Bill” Matthews. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Laverne Prim Matthews; two daughters, Rosalie (Bobby) Lynch and Nancy (Edward) Geisel; five grandchildren, April (Darian) Mendenhall, Jody (Tracia) Lynch, Melissa (Aaron) Hill, Landon Lynch, and Tiffany Lynch; six great grandchildren, Austin and Laci Mendenhall, Kaylen Fields, Olivia Lynch, Kayden Taylor, and Isaiah Hill; one brother, Carl (Ruth) Matthews; and a sister-in-law, Velma Matthews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00PM, Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Prospect UMC with Rev. Robin Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by the NC National Guard Honor Guard and Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prospect UMC cemetery fund, 3541 Smithtown Road East Bend, NC 27018.
