Elkin Ms. Anne Marie Hine, 79, was born February 1, 1938 in Winston Salem, NC, the only child of Eva Caudle Hine and Wilber Hine. At the age of 3, Anne, with her parents, moved to Jonesville, NC where she lived in her family home on N. Bridge St. until 2 years ago. At that time, a fall required her to move for extensive health care. Anne died peacefully in the mid-morning of Friday, March 3, 2017 at Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville, NC. Early in Anne’s life, her skills of patience and listening were evident as she would teach board games such as Monopoly to younger neighborhood children and cousins and would read for long periods of time to these young friends. She had a passion for learning and for teaching that extended to all ages but especially to children and young students. Anne graduated from Elkin High School in 1956, earned an Associate in Arts Degree from Wilkes Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Appalachian State University. She continued her studies at Appalachian in the Library Science Graduate Program. An early position in Anne’s career was with Head Start where she encouraged and motivated pre-school children in their homes, sharing and teaching the love of reading. She was also involved in teaching children of migrant workers. In later years, she was a well-respected volunteer at West Yadkin Elementary School library. It was a special joy to Anne to see and hear results of her encouraging words and teaching. Early in Anne’s life, she became an involved member of her beloved church, First UMC in Elkin. Special to Anne were her ministers, her prayer group, her circle, her Sunday school class, and the hand bell choir. Anne was a dedicated and compassionate Christian. Anne’s love of her family, extended family and friends was very obvious. Anne was very community oriented with her interest and participation in musical productions, arts and crafts events. She was an avid ACC basketball fan. Her kindness extended to her pets. Anne was a world traveler, touring many countries in Europe, also China and Argentina. One memorable trip in the US involved a seven week road tour from Jonesville to Seattle, WA. Both Golden Living Center in Mt. Airy and Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville provided Anne with dignity and respect while in their care. Mountain Valley Hospice contributed greatly to Anne’s quality of life. Two outstanding care giver friends for Anne while still in her home were Bobbi Reinhardt and Angel Caudle. A memorial service will be held Thursday morning, March 9, 2017 at 10:00AM at First United Methodist in Elkin with Pastor Mark Barden officiating. Visitation will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston Salem. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Elkin, Mountain Valley Hospice or to the Humane Society.
