Alvin Burlia Hutchens

September 20, 1936 — August 28, 2021

Yadkinville

Mr. Alvin Burlia Hutchens, 84, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 after a battle with melanoma.  Alvin was born in Yadkin County on September 20, 1936, in the Shacktown community, where he lived his entire life.  Alvin graduated from Yadkinville High School and Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, NC where he played baseball on a scholarship and then drafted into the Army, where he served as a Specialist in field artillery as a tank driver in Korea.

Alvin was an Atlanta Braves, Appalachian State and Duke Basketball fan and enjoyed watching these teams play and all sports.  But what he most enjoyed later in life, was attending the Cruise-In’s with his brother Monty in his 1955 Chevy Bel-Air and driving in the parades each year, especially Christmas and July 4th.  The family always enjoyed their weekend trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway and later when Jimmy became a part of the family, he became the driver for these trips. Alvin and Shirley enjoyed working in their garden, both vegetable and flower and anyone that knew them remembers those beautiful gardens, especially the azaleas in the Spring.  Alvin had a wonderful life, enjoying great health until his melanoma returned this year.

Alvin and Shirley were married on December 23, 1961 and enjoyed many wonderful years together until her passing in 2016.  He is survived by his daughter Traci (Jimmy) Presnell; brother-in-law Dale Reynolds; brother-in-law David (Faye) Reynolds; nephews Darrell Hutchens and Josh Reynolds and niece Molly Reynolds.  He is preceded in death by his parents Burlia and Sallie Bet Todd Hutchens; his wife Shirley Reynolds Hutchens; two brothers, Max Hutchens and Monty Hutchens and sister-in-law, Peggy Hutchens.

The family wishes to thank his Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Team: Dr. Ray Morrow, Dr. Paul Savage & his Oncology group, 6th floor Cancer Center and the SECU Hospice of Yadkinville for their care during Alvin’s illness.

There will be a private visitation and service at a later date.

Memorials can be made to the SECU Hospice of Yadkinville, 243 North Lee Avenue, Yadkinville, NC  27055.
