Barnett Landon Matthews

Mr. Barnett Landon Matthews, 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. He was born in Yadkin County on September 22, 1935 to Barnette Columbus Matthews and Toy Spillman Matthews Rushing. Mr. Matthews was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting. He served in the United States Army for 7 years during the Vietnam era. Mr. Matthews was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by everyone who had the special privilege to know him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Baby Matthews; a grandson, Adam Ross Matthews; a half-brother, Marshall Rushing, Jr.; and a half-sister, Bessie Strickland. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Alma Coe Matthews; a son, Chris Matthews and wife, Dawn; a grandson, Garrett Matthews and wife, Callie; and a half-sister, Brenda Holcomb and husband, Stewart.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at Forbush Friends Meeting. A graveside service will follow in the church cemetery with Pastor Mitchell See officiating. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to extended family members, Earlie Coe and wife, Brenda Coe, Lori Wyble and husband, Lyn Wyble, Shannon Brettl and husband, Thomas Brettl; Surry County EMS; and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center’s ICU for the loving and compassionate care given to Mr. Matthews and his family during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Matthews’ memory to the Surry County EMS, P.O. Box 1467, Dobson, NC 27017, or to Forbush Friends Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 27, East Bend, NC 27018.
