Betty Jane Hall Poindexter, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died June 2, 2024.
Born December 16, 1933, in Forsyth County, N.C., to Travis Ledford and Nellie Allen Hall, Betty spent her childhood in the East Bend, N.C. community she would always love. Attending Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, N.C. started her lifelong Demon Deacon fandom, though she learned to root for the Tar Heels too when she married a UNC-Chapel Hill alumnus, Jesse Lee Poindexter, Jr., also of East Bend, in 1951.
Jesse’s job as a newspaper reporter took the couple to Greenville, N.C. and Concord, N.C. before they settled in the Old Town section of Winston-Salem, N.C., where Betty would live for the next sixty years. Betty joined the Forsyth County Tax Office until she took a job as a teller at Northwestern Bank, eventually becoming one of the bank’s first female branch managers and assistant vice presidents before she retired from the company.
Betty loved to travel. She frequently joined Jesse for trips to Civil War battlefields and reunions of shipmates who had served aboard the USS Kilty in World War II. A highlight for Betty and Jesse was visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial during a trip to Hawaii.
In her later years, Betty retained her avid fandom of college sports. She loved to read the Winston-Salem Journal, tell winding and laughter-filled stories with Yadkin County relatives, and dote on her cat, Sabrina.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Travis and Nellie Allen Hall; husband, Jesse Lee Poindexter, Jr.; brother, Thomas Ledford Hall (Wanda); and son, William Edward Poindexter.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Scott Poindexter (Susan); daughter, Mary Elizabeth Rutledge; grandchildren Matthew Scott Poindexter (Elizabeth), Emily Poindexter Tucker (Patrick), and Aaron Scott Williams; great-grandchildren Cora Watts Poindexter and Mary Friday Poindexter; nieces, Karen Michelle Hall and Jennifer Lynn Hall; and extended family.
