EAST BEND - Mrs. Bonnie Jean Smith Hennings, 86, of Butner Mill Road passed away Monday, April 1, 2024, at Atrium Health Baptist Medical Center. She was born September 30, 1937, in Stokes County to the late Kineth Lester “KL” Smith and Brona Futrelle Tuttle Smith. Mrs. Hennings was a graduate of Old Richmond High School where she was extremely well-known. She loved sports and was a star player on the basketball team, a cheerleader, and enjoyed playing softball for several years even after she was married with children. Mrs. Hennings never knew a stranger and was always active helping or visiting others in the community or nursing homes with her husband, George Joseph Hennings. They delivered for Meals on Wheels, and her other interests included basket weaving, painting, and playing cards – she was a card shark! Mrs. Hennings was a faithful member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, and worked with the youth groups. Mrs. Hennings was an excellent cook and loved to share her food with family and friends. She was a special loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Hennings Priddy; her brothers, June Tuttle (Libby) Smith and David Anderson Smith; her brother-in-law, Bobby Kye. Surviving are her devoted husband, of 68 years, George Hennings; her children, Eddy (Vickie) Hennings, Andy (Debbie) Hennings, Cindy (Arvon) Davis; grandchildren, Tina (Allen) Jester, Shelly Hartman, Cara Jean Davis, Jace Alexander Davis; great-grandchildren, Jody Lloyd Jester, Adrienne Lynn Jester, Dylan Robert Priddy; sisters, Janie Smith Kye, LeeAnn Smith (David) Myers; sister-in-law, Debbie Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 6, 2024, in the Gentry Family Chapel of Gentry Family Funeral Service in East Bend by Rev. Stuart Jones and Rev. Laura-Lee Jones. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the graveside service in the fellowship hall, where refreshments will be provided by the church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice in memory of Mrs. Bonnie Hennings. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Surry County Emergency Medical Services, Mt. Airy Police Department, Atrium Health AirCare, and Atrium Health Nurses, Doctors, and staff of 5-B Trauma ICU for all the dedicated response and loving care given to Mrs. Hennings.
