David Alfred Sowards, 71, a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend was called home to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, December 6, 2024 at Novant Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Doyle Sowards, infant brother twins Jerry and Terry Sowards and infant grandson Sowards twins. David never met a stranger and was loved by everyone that he met. He loved to talk and share stories, especially ones about growing up with his family in the mountains of Virginia. David was a good-natured teaser and loved to joke around with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, fishing, pilfering on old cars and trucks and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. David loved being with his family during get-togethers, celebrations and vacations. Most of all, he cherished the opportunity to be at church to worship his Savior with his brothers and sisters in Christ. David is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Patti Hampton Sowards, of Dobson, NC; daughter, Rebecca Luffman (Jackie) of State Road, NC, daughter, Monica Porter of Siloam, NC and son, David Wayne Sowards of Dobson, NC; grandchildren, Brooke Martin of State Road, NC, Beau Martin (Hannah) of Elkin, NC, Abby Marion (John) of Dobson, NC, Sophia Porter and her father Rob Porter of North Wilkesboro, NC, Ty and Khloe Sowards and their mother, Brooke Sowards of Dobson, NC; great grandchildren, Isla and Elaina Martin of Elkin, NC; sister, Tammy Addington (Gus) of Dobson NC, brothers Burley Sowards of Pilot Mountain, NC, Lenville Sowards (Lois) of Boonville, NC, and Ricky Sowards (Melissa) of Pound, VA; a special aunt, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024, at New Grace Baptist Church in Elkin, NC. Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00pm with a church service following at 3:00pm. David’s dear friends and brothers in Christ, Reverend Raleigh Burnett and Reverend Bill Spurlin will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8. Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville is serving the Sowards Family.
