Yadkinville Mrs. Demarie Earley Nix, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2019 at Yadkin Nursing Center. Demarie was born in Rutherford County, the youngest daughter of the late Claude D. and Della Harris Earley. After graduating from Central High School in Rutherfordton, she married her late husband, Billy Jay Nix. They moved to Yadkinville in 1967. Demarie went back to school and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Appalachian State University and later her Master’s Degree. She began her teaching career at East Bend Elementary and then taught at Yadkinville Elementary until her retirement in 1992. Demarie was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence. During retirement, she volunteered with Christian Ministries, Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross. She was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school. She loved to travel and visited every state in the US as well as Canada, Europe, South America and the Caribbean. Demarie was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Jay Nix; daughter, Sandi Hargette; three brothers and one sister. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Mark) Wood and Susan (Rod) Tait; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Boyette, Zachary Wood, Amy Wood and Andrew Wood. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00PM, Friday, January 18, 2019 at Gentry Family Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow at Yadkin Memorial Gardens.
