Don Marie Martin

Jonesville

Mrs. Don Marie Oliver Martin, 92, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021 at her home.  Mrs. Martin was born July 8, 1928 in Mecklenburg County to William “Carl” and Maude Kerley Oliver.  She was a member of Jonesville First Baptist Church where she was a choir member for over 60 years.  She also taught Sunday School and Bible School, was a GA Leader and a Scout Leader.  Mrs. Martin was a seamstress, drapery maker, and specialized in beautiful hand-smocked dresses.  She was an avid reader, played cards & dominos, loved camping at the river and taking family trips to the beach.  Mrs. Martin cross stitched pillows and sold them at Brinegar’s Cabin, and did Grandma Moses style paintings.  She was known for burning the bread and her robust laughter.  She loved her family with passion and will be deeply missed. 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thad Lee Martin; two sisters, Peggy Eidson and Betty Melvin; and two brothers, Ned Oliver and Bill Oliver.  She is survived by four daughters, Susan (R. Joe) Childress, Carrie (James) Cox, Sally (Mike) Atwood, and Emily (Randy) Lowder; grandchildren, Robert (Melissa) Childress, Eli (Bethany) Cox, Caleb (Meredith) Newman, Dylan (Sarah) Atwood, Evan (Kaylee) Atwood, Ben Osborne, and Chloe Osborne; two great grandchildren, Dustin and Amber Childress; and a great-great grandchild, Emery Childress; a sister, Lynn Lampley; sisters-in-law, Daphnia Martin, Gaye Martin, and Polly Oliver; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Martin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00PM, Sunday, June 6, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Jonesville with Rev. Roger Hensley and Rev. Pam Anthony officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunrise Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00PM, Saturday evening at the church.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mtn. Valley Hospice 243 N. Lee Ave. Yadkinville, NC. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Mtn. Valley Hospice and to Carrie Cox for the loving care given to her mama during this difficult time.  Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville is serving the Martin family.
