Dorothy Mae Adams Holcomb, 90, of Yadkinville, NC passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. She was born in the Union Cross area of Yadkin County to Berlie and Maude Williams Adams on June 10, 1927. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who dearly loved her family. She enjoyed working outside in her flowers and was able to stay active doing so until the age of 88, at which her health began to deteriorate. She was the first person to work atop Nebo Fire Tower where she was responsible for calling in smoke and fire reports to stations on the ground. Prior to marriage and family, Dorothy worked for a brief period of time at Hanes Hosiery as an Inspector. She also faithfully volunteered for 14 years at Yadkinville Elementary School reading with the children helping them to become better readers. Dorothy was a 1944 graduate of Boonville High School and was a member of Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church for over 60 years. Dorothy was married to the love of her life, Arthur C. Holcomb for 63 years until his death on September 4, 2010. In addition to Arthur and her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Hoyt Adams, and two sisters, Reba A. Davis and Evelyn A. Barnard. Dorothy is survived by her four children Margaret (Butch) Taylor of Winston-Salem, Jean Kelly, Dale (Angie) Holcomb of Yadkinville, and Lisa (Mark) Counsell of Atlanta, Georgia. Dorothy was the grandmother to eight grandchildren; Jennifer (Brent) Jacques, Suzanne (Damond) VanWeerdhuizen, Brad (Libby) Shepherd, Jordan (Hannah) Holcomb, Garrett Holcomb, and Riley, Sidney and Grace Counsell, as well as 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Billy Wade (Doris) Adams of Boonville as well as several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation and love to her caretaker and special friend, Cathy Sparks of Boonville. Dorothy looked forward to seeing her every day and sharing stories… thank you for loving our Mom. Funeral service will be held on Friday September 22, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Junior Thompson officiating, Burial and graveside prayer will immediately follow the chapel service at the Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 immediately prior to the service.
