Lee Winston-Salem- Dr. John Gambrell Lee, DDS, 85, of Hayes Forest Drive, and formerly of Boonville, NC passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Brookridge Retirement Community. He was born August 22, 1933 in Greensboro, NC to the late O.E. and Ethel Sowell Lee. Dr. Lee attended Greensboro Senior High, Mars Hill College, the University of North Carolina, and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. After graduating in 1959, Dr. Lee served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Then, after his honorable discharge, he and his wife, Bettie, settled in Boonville, N.C. where he practiced dentistry from 1961 until he retired in 2001. Throughout his life and career, John Lee was a member of and/or served the following organizations: Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society, Blue Ridge Dental Society, Life Member of the UNC Alumni Association, Morehead Scholarship Selection Committee, Yadkin County Board of Health and Boonville Lions Club. Dr. and Mrs. Lee were faithful members of Boonville Baptist Church for over 50 years, where John served the church faithfully as a teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, Choir Director, and a member of the Fellowship of Deacons. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, where they later became and are currently members of Ardmore Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, O.E. and Ethel Lee, Dr. Lee was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. David Lee, Dr. Page Lee, and by his sister, Jennie Stewart. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Bettie Upchurch Lee, of the home; his daughters, Linda Lee Juntgen, and husband, Tim; Laura Lee Buchanan, and husband, Mark; 3 loving grandchildren, Brandon Cleary (wife Melinda); Emily Cleary; Alex Buchanan, who called him and will remember him as “D-Daddy”. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ann Lee; brother-in-law, Paul Stewart; and his faithful office staff, Pat Shore, Teresa Taylor and Glenda Wooten. The family invites you to join them to glorify God and to celebrate the life of John G. Lee at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 30 at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with Dr. Gina Brock and Rev. Jack Gentry officiating. Following the service, there will be time to visit with the family and remember shared joys, laughter and love.
