Dr. Pauline Frances Calloway passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 in Lillington, NC.
Pauline Calloway is survived by her niece Sonya Jennings and great nieces Amanda Calloway Brantley and Lauren Morris. She is preceded in death by her parents Rufus and Treva Michael Calloway; sister Elizabeth Calloway; by brothers, Charles, James, Richard, and Allen Calloway; and by several nephews.
Dr. Calloway worked as a Family & Consumer Sciences Agent in Chowan County prior to attending graduate school at NC State University. Upon completion of the doctoral program, she was employed as a District Director with the Florida Cooperative Extension Service.
A pioneer in the field of Child Development, Dr. Pauline Calloway served as both a teacher and advocate for families and children in Harnett County. She was instrumental in bringing programs such as HelpNet, Smart Start (Partnership for Children), More at Four, and Child Care Resources to Harnett County.
In 1987, the Dean of the Campbell University’s School of Education asked her to consider coming to Campbell to teach, and the rest is history. During her tenure at Campbell she was instrumental in laying the ground work for the Birth-Kindergarten certification program and she traveled abroad to China, Egypt, and Oxford, England, serving as a delegate and advocate for Child Development.
Many students were greatly influenced and inspired by Dr. Calloway’s commitment to Child Development, and they continue her work with children and families in Cooperative Extension offices and other professional positions throughout NC and in other states. In recognition of her significant contributions to Family & Consumer Sciences, she was inducted into the Jane S. McKimmon Hall of Fame.
A member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek for more than 40 years, Dr. Calloway was very active in her church and served on many committees. She was involved in many organizations to include: Harnett County Historical Society Foundation, J.A. Campbell House, High Point University Alumni Board, 4-H Camp Millstone History and Learning Center, NC 4-H Development Board of Directors, Harnett County Extension Advisory Council, Harnett County Child Care Resources, and the Cornelia Pearson Campbell Book Club.
Dr. Pauline Calloway was an avid reader, a sports enthusiast and loved to travel. She especially enjoyed spending time in the NC Mountains.
Dr. Calloway will be buried in a private ceremony in Yadkinville, NC. A memorial service will take place 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek by Rev.
