Elizabeth Mathis Groce, 80, departed this life Dec. 28, 2017, at her home after a lengthy illness. Lib, who was most often called “Granny,” will be remembered for her love of her family and the Lord, her inviting smile and infectious laugh, along with her special gift in the kitchen. Every day was Thanksgiving at Granny’s table. She was born Nov. 9, 1937, in Wilkes County to Garland and Vertie Mae Mathis. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Rose Collins and brother Tony Mathis. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Roger Groce, son Von Groce (Donna), daughter Beverly Buice (Jim), grandchildren Crystal Mullis (Mikey), Landon Poplin and Caleb Poplin (Morgan), and great-grandchildren Kaleigh Mullis, Addy Mullis and Henry Poplin. She is also survived by a sister Joann Brown (late Roby Brown), brothers RG Mathis (Elizabeth), Ray Mathis (Dorry) and Rex Mathis, brother-in-law Larry Collins, sister-in-law Brenda Mathis and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville Friday, Dec. 29, from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00PM, Saturday, Dec. 30, at Marler Road Baptist Church, in Hamptonville, with Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Mrs. Groce will lie in state from 1:30 to 2:00PM, prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
