Hamptonville- Mr. George Kenneth “Ken” Allred, Sr., 88, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at the SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin. Ken was born September 6, 1930 to Reuben Aldas and Emma Myers Allred. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Hamptonville, where he once served as Sunday School Superintendent, UMYF Counselor, and choir director. Ken established an annual tradition of singing “O Holy Night” to close the Christmas program at St. Paul. He loved music and singing with his brother, R.A. and his sister, Marjorie. He was often requested to sing at many local weddings and funerals. Ken graduated from West Yadkin High School in 1950. He played baseball and basketball. He married his high school sweetheart, Doris June Smoot, in 1950. Ken worked at Hanes Hosiery and Western Electric while continuing to grow tobacco and raise cattle on the family farm. He was also a poultry producer for Tyson and Perdue Farms. He and Doris enjoyed working in the church, playing tennis and square dancing. Doris passed in 1992. After retirement, Ken founded and operated the 3A Garbage Service until 2000, when it merged with Waste Management of Houston, TX. He also worked at the Statesville Auto Auction for many years. In 2007, Ken married Shelby Rash. With Shelby’s help and encouragement, he continued to play his bass fiddle at the Alleghany Jubilee and other locations. He and Shelby loved to travel the back roads of Yadkin and surrounding counties to view the countryside. Ken loved life and enjoyed every minute, always maintaining a positive attitude even during his illness. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, R.A. and Marcus Allred, sister, Marjorie Allred Caudle; his first wife, Doris June Smoot; infant son, William Eugene “Billy” Allred and son, Mark Steven Allred. He is survived by his wife, Shelby Rash Allred, of the home; son, George Kenneth “Butch” Allred, and wife, Vickie, of Hamptonville; grandson, Justin Allred and wife, Lisa, of Mint Hill; 3 step-sons, Ricky, Randy, Leroy Rash; 5 step-grandchildren; 2 sep-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM Friday, December 28, 2018 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Hamptonville. His funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 PM Friday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Claudia Harrellson, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either St. Paul United Methodist Church, 3616 Buck Shoals Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020, Yadkin Christian Ministries, 117 Woodlyn Drive, Yadkinville, NC 27055, or to the SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin, 243 West Lee Avenue, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
