Grady Harrison Simmons, Sr.

Jonesville Mr. Grady Harrison Simmons, Sr., 94, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at SECU Hospice Home of Yadkin. Mr. Simmons was born April 14, 1923 in Forsyth County to Dewey and Lula Luffman Simmons. Mr. Simmons joined the US Navy in April of 1942 and served in the European Theatre during WWII on the USS Brennan. He worked for Chatham Manufacturing in the woven fiber dept. and traveled in Europe for 17 years teaching and building the fiber woven operation. He also did training in Italy, England and the Netherlands. Mr. Simmons played the bass fiddle with the Wilkes County Buddies for 12 years and the Mountaineers of Galax for 5 years. He attended Arlington First Baptist Church.   In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Pitts and a brother, Leo Simmons. He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Inez Gilley Simmons; son, Grady (Jolene) Simmons, Jr.; two grandchildren, Grady (Sheila) Simmons, III and Jolie (Krag) Johnsen; three great grandchildren, Brittany (Andy) Luebchow, Maxwell Johnsen and Eden Johnsen; a great-great granddaughter, Hunter Luebchow; three sisters, Marie Robinson, Naomi Thompson, and Inez (Tommy) Fuquay; one brother, Johnny Simmons; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00AM, Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Gentry Family Chapel in Jonesville with Rev. Matty Ponce De Leon, Chaplain Mark Brown, and Rev. Tommy Fuquay officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by US Naval Honor Guard and Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00AM prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SECU Hospice Home of Yadkin, 320 W. Maple St. Yadkinville, NC 27055. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of SECU Hospice Home and Mtn. Valley Hospice for the loving care given to Mr. Simmons.
