Harvey Elmer Smith

Boonville Mr. Harvey Elmer Smith, 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and to finally meet his father on Friday, February 2, 2018. Mr. Smith was born July 18, 1926 in Yadkin County to Olive Motsinger Smith. His father, Harvey E. Smith passed away just a few weeks before his birth. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served during WWII, alongside his good friend John Wesley Mathis. Harvey worked for Chatham Manufacturing for many years, and also ran Smith’s Cash Grocery in Boonville. He was a lifelong member of Boonville Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. Harvey also served as mayor of Boonville for 34 years, fire chief for Boonville VFD, was a member of Boonville Lions Club, and was currently a board member for the fire dept. He played basketball for Elon College and had wonderful stories of playing against Duke and Carolina. Harvey started refereeing in 1949 and enjoyed it for many years. Harvey will be best remembered for being humble, kind hearted, and always willing to help anyone. Also for taking many, many people for their first airplane ride. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Roselyn Bryant Smith. He is survived by two sons, Frank (Sandra & her daughter Jill) Smith and Danny Smith; four granddaughters, Tess, Danielle, Dorsey, and Sara Smith; a very special friend, Kate Morrison; and several nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00PM, Monday, February 5, 2018 at Boonville Baptist Church with Rev. Lester Holcomb and Rev. Jenny Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Boonville Cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00PM prior to the service at the church.
