EAST BEND-  Mrs. Hazel Joyner Matthews, 103, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023 at her home.  She was born June 21, 1920 in Yadkin County to the late Charley G. and Cornelia Potts Joyner.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Bernard “Bernie” Matthews, her parents, and brothers, Tom, Weldon, Wiley “Hank”, and Stanley Joyner; along with her sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Norman and Addie Mae Poindexter.  Hazel leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Jerry L. Matthews of East Bend and close friend, Cynthia Darnell; a grandson Jeffrey Matthews, his wife, Amy; and great-granddaughter Katlyn (Colton) Pearson of Wilkesboro, NC; great-great-granddaughter, Starlyn Pearson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Matthews was a faithful member of East Bend United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities: Secretary of Literature and Publications for over 40 years, Communion preparation and Christian Social Involvement.

Hazel and her husband were co-owners of East Bend Hardware where she worked for several years along -side her sister-in-law, Edna D. Matthews.

Her passion was cooking, always ready to cook for Church functions, as well as community fund raisers.  Hazel was well-known for her canned cucumbers, fruit jellies, preserves, jams, as well as delicious cakes and pecan tarts.  These items were hits at her Church Bazaars.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, Jennifer Brendle for all the many years she spent taking care of “Gramma”, also Helen Coram and Mary Griffin, her most recent caregivers, for all the loving comfort and friendship they gave to “Gramma”.  You three ladies were a blessing to our entire family.  A special thank you also to the nurses and staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for the loving care and support provided to the family and Mrs. Matthews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 243 North Lee Ave., Yadkinville, NC  27055. 

There will be a Private Service at a later Date.
