James O. Gant, Jr.

James Oscar Gant, Jr., 93, passed in his home on June 22, 2023. He was married to the late Sara Day Pender Gant for 70 years. He was born on July 29, 1929 to the late James Oscar Gant, Sr. and Janie Annie Sims Gant. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Hazelene Sossamon and brothers, John Gant and Paul Gant. He is survived by three children, James O. Gant, III “Jimmy”, Linda Gant Gibson, and Charles “Dale” Gant; 46 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and step grandchildren; and one brother, David Gant. James had 5 generations of his family, which he was very proud of. 

James spent 8 years in the Coast Guard serving his country. He was trained as an electrician, was a master electrician and trained many others in the Electrical Apprenticeship Program. James was an active member of Wilkes Faith Church. His life was the happiest with his family and in the woods. He was an avid hunter and taught his children and grandchildren to hunt. It was a family joke that he hunted with Daniel Boone himself. He loved to spend time at his S.C. cabin that was built with the help of family. It was set back in the woods where he could be with nature and God. It was probably his favorite place. James resided in Wilkes County, N.C. but his hometown was Davidson, N.C. where he grew up and began his life with Sara.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Wilkes Faith Church. The family will greet friends from 10:00-11:00 am prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson, NC (Mecklenburg County) with military honors.
