Jewell LeFaye Wilkins Welborn passed away Monday, December 2, 2024 at her home. She was born August 22, 1942 to the late Gurney Grant Wilkins and Ruby Oliver Wilkins Sizemore. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, James D. Wilkins and Jerald Paige Wilkins, stepfather, Shady Sizemore and half-sister, Mary Ruth Sparks. Surviving are her loving husband of sixty-six years, Marion G. Welborn and children, Elizabeth Gentry of Yadkinville, Mike (Kelly) Welborn of Boonville and Mark (Teresa) Welborn of Boonville. The grandchildren who are left to cherish her memory are Garrett (Anna) Welborn, Mitch (Candace) Welborn, Megan Gregory (Mohammed), Chandler (Kailub) Russell, Morgan (Taylor) Church, McKinnon (Carly) Welborn, Logan Gregory, Mason (Christen) Welborn, Hunter (Layne) Michael, Samantha (Ike) Anderson and Gatlin (Maggie) Welborn; great-grandchildren, Zahra and Zaida Samoura, Emory and Creed Church, Zailey Gregory; Krue, Colyns, and Keelan Russell, Barrett, Lynden, and Gaines Welborn, Maya Welborn, Madden Michael; Maddox, Alivia and Montgomery Welborn. Jewell was known as “Mama Jewell” to all her grandchildren as well as her great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Margaret Mitchell of Winston-Salem, and half-brother, Larry (Pat) Sizemore of Jonesville as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jewell married the love of her life on June 28, 1958. They lived in Clemmons for twenty years where they built three apartment complexes. While in Clemmons Jewell helped her husband with the rental business as well as owning and operating a hair salon out of her home. Jewell was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church where she served on various committees, was president of the Women’s Society and served on the Trustee Board for several years. She was also a Girl Scout leader for fourteen years, a den mother for four years and also worked with the Boy Scouts for several years. She and Marion moved back to Yadkin County in 1979, where they had grown up as children. She became an active member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting where she also served on many committees as well as serving on the NC Yearly Meeting Committee for Family Issues. Jewell served on the Southern Community Bank Advisory Board and was a member of the Yadkin County Extension Homemakers, serving as the county president.
Jewell had a long life of traveling, serving her community and working but her biggest joy and satisfaction came from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her home is filled with beautiful family portraits and each child portrayed held a special place in the heart of “Mama Jewell.” Many priceless memories will now replace a life that was well-lived by a good and faithful, loving and caring servant.
A funeral service will be held in the Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm by the Rev. Randy Quate. Burial will follow at Deep Creek Friends Cemetery in Yadkinville. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on December 5, 2024 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
