Boone Mr. John Wayne Dinkins, 75, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Dinkins was born January 7, 1943 in Forsyth County to John and Edith Williams Dinkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Boone, and was a member of the Appalachian Alumni Association. Mr. Dinkins was a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in 1984. He started his career at Appalachian when he was still a student there in 1961. Mr. Dinkins was the technical force behind the ASU’s teleconferencing operation which serves the university and region with voice and slow scan communications. He was also a member of the Watauga Amateur Radio Club and a former officer of the Lion’s Club. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dinkins was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles. He is survived by one aunt, Joyce Williams; one uncle, Aldene Wooten; 29 cousins; and many special friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00PM, Tuesday evening at Gentry Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00AM, Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Boone with Rev. Roy A. Dobyns, Jr. officiating. A second funeral service will be held at 3:00PM, Wednesday at Forbush Baptist Church with Rev. Justin Crouse officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forbush Baptist Church, 3917 Old US 421 Hwy E, Yadkinville, NC 27055 or to Boone First Baptist Church 375 W. King Street Boone, NC 28607.
