Yadkinville-  Mr. John Thomas Matthews, 74, of Walnut Avenue went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday May 1, 2022 at Atrium Health Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.  He was born April 12, 1948 in Forsyth County to the late Clyde Wesley Matthews, Sr and Martha Jane Long Matthews.  Mr. Matthews was retired as Plant Manager from Yadkin Valley Telephone with over 35 years of service. He previously worked for Westinghouse and AT&T.   John was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Vietnam War.  He was a member Center United Methodist Church and previous member of Prospect United Methodist Church. "Johnny, Dad, Pepaw" loved his family and is fondly remembered for his quick wit, technical savvy and keeping a meticulous lawn. He was also known for being able to "fix" almost anything, given the chance. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Wesley Matthews, Jr., and by his father-in-law, Joseph Thad Holcomb.  Those left  to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of more than 16 years, Charlotte Christine “Chris” Matthews, of the home; his children, Jennifer Matthews Pruitt and husband, Matthew; Janel Matthews Steelman and husband, Lincoln; Heather Lutz and husband, Hayes; grandchildren, Carson and Saylor Pruitt, Rutledge, Emerson, Hensley, and Phineas Steelman; his loving sister, Brenda Matthews Foster and husband, Derris; his mother-in-law, Annette Holcomb; sister-in-law, Teresa Geiger; and several Special nieces, nephews, extended family, and numerous friends.  The family would like to extend their gratitude to his sister, Brenda, whom he referred to as “His Special Angel” for all of her loving care and support through the years.  A memorial service will be held at a later date for the family.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donors choice.  Online condolences may be made to www.gentryfuneralservice.com.
