East Bend -  John Henry Slater, 83, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at his home in East Bend, NC.  Mr. Slater was born June 29, 1934 to Enoch Ray and Velma McKnight Slater.  He was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church in Yadkinville, NC.  He was owner and operator of Slater’s Barber Shop in the Enon Community for 50 years.  The Barber Shop was a hub of the community for great haircuts, including an occasional flattop and close straight razor shave, friendly conversation, cold drink, first haircuts for many children, many good jokes and debate on all current events.  John was a proud Army veteran serving our country in the U.S. Army Air Defense Command responsible for Nike missile radar tracking at Fort Hancock in Sandy Hook, NJ.   He loved farming, hunting, fishing and John Deere tractors.  He was a charter member of the Forbush Volunteer Fire Department.  John was a hardworking provider, loyal husband, supportive father, loving grandfather and caring great-grandfather.  Surviving are his wife of 63 years Velma Taylor Slater, three children: Karen S. Young (Richard), Jonathan Slater and Anthony Slater (Marie), four grandchildren: Shakara Canter Short (Travis), Shane Young, Henry and Leila Slater, two great-grandchildren: Noah and Payton Canter, two sisters: Alice Carter and Della Hobson and many wonderful nieces and nephews.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on March 17, 2018 at Gentry Family Funeral Home in Yadkinville, NC.  The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 18, 2018 at Maplewood Baptist Church in Yadkinville, NC.  Burial will follow at Richmond Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Boonville, NC.
