John "Sonny" & Barbara Newman

John “Sonny” Newman, 83 and Barbara Newman ., 81, of Jonesville passed away on Saturday August 13, 2022 at their home. They both was preceded in death by a daughter Vickie Lynn Newman. John was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters all from Tennessee. He was born in Maryville Tennessee. Barbara was born in Winchester Kentucky and was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister, with only one sister living in Tennessee Linda Owens. Left behind to grieve for them are their daughter Rebecca “Becky” (Terry) Wood of Jonesville; grandson Brian Wood of Jonesville; and a granddaughter Pam (Shawn) Hutchens, also they left behind five great granddaughters, Elizabeth Hutchens Nicole Hutchens, Alexis Hutchens, McKenzie Hutchens, Danielle Hutchens; one great grandson Logan Hutchens. They also left many nieces and nephews mostly from Tennessee and Kentucky, They also left their furry companions, Daisy Mae and Sophia Grace. John worked many places since he was 14. Started as a grill cook and joined the National Guard at Fort Stewart Georgia for 10 years while working at Kmart. He was transferred to several states among the east coast and middle Texas. After 20 years he moved back closer to his family in Tennessee going to North Carolina where he worked for several years as a manager of Lowes Food. Then transferred years to TG&Y of Elkin. Went from there after his daughters death to Wal Mart for several years. He worked at the Pepsi Cola plant for ten years. In the last few years of his life he helped pick apples at a farm during the Sparta Earthquake. And then helped at Big Lots for five years stocking shelves. Then he worked for Kim Poston putting tile down in a lot of homes all over the area. He finally retired at 82. Barbara worked mostly as a nursing aid at nursing homes wherever we lived. Including the old Hugh Chatham Nursing Home in Elkin. She than changed by becoming deli manager at Lowes food in Elkin for years then transferred as an accountant for Lowes Food in Dobson. She then in 1996 she opened her own business in Jonesville called Barbara Bake Shop until last year when she retired. They both were loved and known by many throughout the area and will be sorely missed after being together for 62 years of marriage. Love you Mom and dad and you will be missed for your love and knowledge you gave us all. Rest in Peace. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday August 20, 2022 at Crestwood Memorial Gardens by Rev Ed Birt and Rev. Billie Moore.
