Joseph "Joe" Bennie Stokes

Joseph “Joe” Bennie Stokes, 84, passed away peacefully at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Friday, March 8, 2019. He was born in Yadkin County, NC on February 1, 1935; son of the late George Stokes and Jettie Shore Stokes. Joe was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and retired from Vulcan Materials, where he worked in quality control. Joe played semi-pro baseball for many years, and loved coaching baseball in the West Yadkin community. He coached the 421 Citgo softball team, He loved trout fishing. He has written five books about his community and family history. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Cynthia Cheek Stokes; sister: Gladys Lowe, sister -in- law: Doris Stokes, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and mother-in-law, Helen Cheek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Romie, Truman, Marvin, Odell, and Harold Stokes, and four sisters: Ruby, Wavolene, Lavern Stokes, and Faye Cornelius. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Tucker and Pastor Joel Riley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Yadkin Sports Club in memory of Joe Stokes, P.O. Box 3, Hamptonville, NC 27020. Online condolences may be made at www.gentryfuneralservice.com.
