Katie Matthews Davis

Katie Lee Matthews Davis, passed peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2022, from her earthly home to her heavenly home where she will join her husband of 75 years, Gerdie Samuel Davis. She was 94 years old. Katie was born on December 5, 1927, to Flora Enola and Robert Winfield (Bob Jim) Matthews in East Bend, North Carolina. She had 6 siblings who predeceased her – Junior L. Matthews, Edward C. Matthews, Frances J. Hobson, Betty Lou Vestal, Charles Lovell Matthews, and Bobby Neal Matthews. She was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Grady Gough. Katie is survived by her daughters, Debbie Gough and Tanya (Mike) Hamm. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Melissa (Kevin) Swaim and Misty Hamm. She loved her precious great grandchildren, Michael, Jacob, and Katherine Swaim and Brooklyn Heyman. She is also survived by a brother, Archie J. Matthews (Barbara), a sister, Polly McKnight, and a sister-in-law, Rosa Matthews along with many nieces and nephews. Katie graduated from East Bend High School. She went to work at Hanes Hosiery. After she and Gerdie married on October 19, 1946, they lived in Elkin, NC. She graduated from Elkin Business College and went to work for Drs. J.E. Minnick, and J. C. Kern at their Boonville Office. When they retired, she went to work at Yadkin County Department of Social Services where she worked until her retirement. She attended Prospect United Methodist Church in East Bend all her life. She was the oldest living member. She served in many capacities at her church. She was the president of the UMW, a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, member of the choir, Chairperson of Christian Education for many years, and the church historian. She always baked a pound cake and took it to newcomers in the community inviting them to visit her church. Katie is known for her delicious pound cake and Swiss Chocolate cake. She and Gerdie always had a big garden which they shared with friends and family. She canned enough food for the entire family and her neighbors. When she was younger, she sang on the radio with the Smiling Cowgirls. She was also an excellent seamstress winning the NC State Grange Sewing Contest in the 1950’s. She was also one of the founding members of the Fall Creek Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary. Her funeral service will be at 3 pm on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at Prospect United Methodist Church. Visitation will be an hour before the service in the Family Life Center. The family requests that masks be worn for visitation and the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Yadkin Nursing Care Center for the love and care given to Katie for the past 7 years. They would also like to thank the Neuro ICU at Atrium Health and Mountain Valley Hospice for the loving care given to their mother in these last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Katie’s church, Prospect United Methodist Church, 3541 Smithtown Road, East Bend, NC 27018 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 243 N Lee Street, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
